What we treat
At Geisinger Behavioral Health Center, we understand that mental health disorders can manifest in different ways, and people may not experience the same symptoms. Inpatient treatment provides a high level of support for those who have severe, ongoing symptoms of mental health concerns. The goal of treatment is stabilization and improved daily functioning.
Our acute inpatient treatment programs serve the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre communities and provide support for a broad spectrum of mental health conditions. Common disorders we treat include:
- Depression. Through a comprehensive treatment approach, we aim to help people who have depression find peace and reduced symptoms while improving their overall well-being.
- Anxiety disorders. Our evidence-based therapies help people who have anxiety disorders develop effective coping strategies and find relief from symptoms.
- Bipolar disorder. We offer tailored treatment plans to address both depressive and manic episodes, focusing on mood stabilization, coping skills and psychoeducation.
- Psychosis. Specialized treatment is available for people who are experiencing symptoms of psychosis, including hallucinations and delusions. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to provide effective interventions that may include medication management, individual therapy and group therapy.
- Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We recognize the significant impact traumatic events can have on someone’s mental health. Our trauma-informed approach to care ensures that people who have PTSD receive support, validation and evidence-based therapies to address their symptoms and promote healing.

Our approach to mental health treatment
At Geisinger Behavioral Health Center, we believe that comprehensive mental health treatment requires a compassionate, well-rounded approach. We understand that it can feel overwhelming to reach out for help for a mental health concern, which is why we make the admissions process simple and straightforward. To begin the process, people who need care can reach out to a member of our knowledgeable admissions team anytime, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Patients who participate in our inpatient treatment program can expect:
- Personalized assessment and treatment plan. Treatment at Geisinger Behavioral Health Center begins with a thorough assessment of each person, including their medical history, their goals for treatment and any previous mental healthcare received. We will take the time to understand your unique circumstances so that we can provide the best care possible.
- Evidence-based therapies. The trained behavioral health clinicians at Geisinger Behavioral Health are trained in various evidence-based therapies to promote the best outcomes for our patients. Patients have the opportunity to attend both group and individual therapies led by educated and licensed professionals. These therapies are guided by principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI) and a 12-Step approach to healing.
- A multidisciplinary team. We believe that a diverse team of clinicians and mental health professionals offers the best chance for someone to find long-term success from an inpatient treatment program. When multiple disciplines are represented, each element of someone’s mental health can be addressed. Our multidisciplinary team members collaborate closely with each other throughout the entire treatment process to provide coordinated care. Our team includes board-certified or board-eligible psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, mental health nurse practitioners, case managers and other allied health professionals.
- Experiential therapies. We recognize the value of incorporating experiential therapies into a mental health treatment program. These kinds of therapies go beyond traditional talk therapies by engaging people in activities that promote self-expression and creativity. Creative arts therapists, occupational therapists and dietitians lead various experiential and recreation therapies at our facility.
- Basic medical care and medication management. Our highly trained and licensed medical professionals are available on campus to provide basic medical care and medication management services. These services are an essential component of comprehensive mental health treatment. You will work closely with our team of psychiatrists and other medical staff to determine if medication is necessary for stabilization. Additionally, our staff will provide close monitoring and regular reassessments of your physical health during your time in our care to make sure that you are healthy and have everything you need.
- A continuum of care. We understand that mental health treatment is not limited to inpatient care. At Geisinger Behavioral Health Center, we begin planning for your discharge and continuing care from day one in our inpatient program. This may include outpatient aid like support groups or medication management services so that you can continue your healing journey with confidence.
Seeking professional help for a mental health disorder is a necessary and brave step if you want to live a full, healthy life.
If you or a loved one needs mental health treatment, Geisinger Behavioral Health Center is here to provide the empathetic care and support you deserve.
